Foam or Spring Mattress: Which One Should You Really Choose?

Choosing a new mattress is an important decision, yet it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the many options available. Foam, springs, latex, comfort zones… the choices are endless, and so are the promises.

In reality, two technologies dominate the market: foam mattresses and spring mattresses. These are the most common options you’ll find in stores, and they are also the ones that raise the most questions. So, which one should you choose? Here’s what you need to know.

What’s Inside a Mattress?

You can’t see it, but a mattress’s internal construction is what makes all the difference. Foam, springs, or latex—each material has its own characteristics when it comes to support, durability, and breathability.

At Ergosleep, mattresses are designed around one core principle: supporting the spine according to each sleeper’s unique body shape, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. Because great sleep starts with a mattress that’s truly tailored to your body.

Foam Mattress: Contouring Comfort and Motion Isolation

A foam mattress features a core made from technical foam, such as polyurethane, high-resilience foam, or memory foam, depending on the model. As you lie down, the foam gradually adapts to the contours of your body. Your weight is distributed evenly across the surface, creating the characteristic “cocoon-like” feeling of comfort.

Foam mattresses are often the preferred choice for couples because they absorb movement. If your partner turns over during the night, you’re much less likely to feel it. This is a major advantage for light sleepers who are easily disturbed.

Ergosleep foam mattresses are designed to provide the ideal balance—not too firm and not too soft—so your body stays properly aligned throughout the night.

Spring Mattress: Responsive Support and Breathability

A spring mattress works differently. Its core is made up of metal springs. In modern models, these are almost always individually pocketed springs. Each spring is wrapped in its own fabric pocket, allowing the mattress to respond precisely to the pressure applied by different parts of the body.

What many people appreciate about this type of mattress is its responsive support, but also—often overlooked—its excellent airflow. If you tend to sleep hot, this is a feature that can make a real difference.

Some Ergosleep spring mattresses feature multiple comfort zones that provide targeted support for different areas of the body, such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back, because every part of your body has different support needs.

Back Pain: Foam or Spring Mattress?

This is by far the most common question. The honest answer is: both can be excellent choices, depending on the quality of the mattress and your body type.

What matters most is that the mattress keeps your spine in its natural alignment. If it’s too soft, your hips sink too deeply. If it’s too firm, it creates pressure points around the shoulders and hips. In both cases, your back can suffer.

A high-quality foam mattress distributes pressure evenly and adapts closely to your body’s natural curves. Pocket spring mattresses, on the other hand, provide targeted support in different areas, which can make a significant difference for certain sleepers.

Ergosleep mattresses are specifically designed to improve sleeping ergonomics and promote optimal spinal alignment throughout the night.

For Children and Teenagers

Sleep plays a vital role in healthy growth—everyone knows that. What is often overlooked, however, is that the mattress is an important part of the equation.

For children, the priority is stable support and good breathability. Foam mattresses provide consistent comfort, while spring mattresses offer better airflow. Both can be excellent choices, provided you select a high-quality model that will last over time.

During the teenage years, the body changes rapidly. A mattress that is too soft can lead to poor spinal support, while one that is too firm may reduce comfort. The ideal choice is a well-balanced mattress that adapts to a growing body. Pocket spring mattresses are valued for their durability, while high-resilience foam is also an excellent option when it offers sufficient density.

Mattress Sizes:

A mattress that’s too small can make for uncomfortable nights and limited sleeping space. Here are the most common mattress sizes:

  • Single: 90 × 190 cm
  • Tall single sleeper: 90 × 200 cm
  • Double: 140 × 190 cm
  • Tall couples: 140 × 200 cm
  • Queen Size: 160 × 200 cm
  • King Size: 180 × 200 cm

Practical tip: Choose a mattress that is at least 15 cm longer than your height.

How Ergosleep Adapts Your Mattress to Your Body

Firmness is often the biggest challenge when choosing a mattress—and that’s perfectly normal, because it depends on your weight, sleeping position, and body shape. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

That’s why every Ergosleep mattress is available with two zoning options (with or without lumbar support) and three firmness levels: soft, medium, and firm.

To find out exactly what suits your body, you can have your Sleep DNA® measured in our Ergosleep showroom. This analysis identifies your pressure points and determines the optimal mattress configuration for your needs—no guesswork, no compromises.

FAQ

What mattress firmness is best for back pain?

In most cases, a medium-firm to firm mattress offers the best balance of comfort and support. However, the right choice depends on your body shape and sleeping position, which is why an in-store assessment can make all the difference.

Is a firm mattress always better?

No. That’s one of the most common misconceptions. A mattress that is too firm can create pressure points where you least expect them. The goal is to find the right balance—not simply the firmest mattress available.

What about a futon?

Placed directly on the floor, a futon provides very firm and even support, which may suit some sleepers. However, it doesn’t adapt well to the body’s natural shape. For side sleepers in particular, it can increase pressure on the shoulders and hips. A modern ergonomic mattress generally provides far better comfort and support.

How do I know if my mattress is right for me?

Consider your body shape and your preferred sleeping position. If you want a precise answer, have your Sleep DNA® measured in store.

I sweat a lot at night. Which mattress should I choose?

Pocket spring mattresses are usually the best option, as the space between the springs allows air to circulate and moisture to escape. Natural latex can also be a great choice. Some highly contouring foam mattresses, however, tend to retain more heat and may not be ideal if you sleep hot. Don’t forget your bedding either—a breathable mattress cover can make a noticeable difference.
